The National Electoral Commission is mandated to prepare and run the following elections:

Ø  Local Government elections;

Ø  Referendum;

Ø  Legislative elections;

Ø  Presidential elections;

Ø  Any other elections as may be mandated by the law ( i.e Gacaca jurdictions, Conciliators “ Abunzi ”, Youth and Women Council )

The National Electoral Commission is also mandated:

Ø  Establish electoral areas ( Constituencies );

Ø  Creating Provincial, District and Municipal Commission branches;

Ø  Preparing and conducting Civic and Voter Education Programs;

Ø  Announcing and publishing election results;

Ø  Ensuring that elections are free and fair;

Ø  Carrying out any other electoral activities as provided by law.
